This page is a summary of the changes between the
International Ornithological Congress's
"Birds of the World: Recommended
English Names" (Gill, F., and Wright, M., 2006), and the
recently-published sixth edition of
"The Clements
Checklist of Birds of the World" (Clements, J. F., 2007).
Dave Sargeant and David Matson jointly undertook the herculean task of
identifying the numerous changes in taxonomy and nomenclature between
the two lists. The resulting cross-reference forms the basis for this
summary, and I am thankful for their permission to use the data here.
Both the IOC checklist (in CSV, XML, and Excel formats) and the
cross-reference (Excel) are freely available for download from
WorldBirdNames.org.
Unfortunately, the Clements checklist does not seem to be easily
available in a machine-readable format.
What I did
Dave Sargeant announced the availability of this cross-reference to the
orientalbirding mailing list on 2007-10-25, and on request, sent me the
spreadsheet two days later. I got around to looking through it only on
2007-11-08, when I wrote the program to produce this summary.
I opened the spreadsheet (using OpenOffice), and exported the common and
scientific names from both lists into a CSV file (a surprisingly tedious
task). Then I wrote a small script to read the CSV file, build a list of
changes, and use it to produce a concise description of the changes for
each affected genus.
In brief, the program reads a list of records that say "Species X from
checklist A is the same as species Y from checklist B" and identifies
the differences between X and Y. For example, here is the record for
the Booted Eagle from the CSV file:
"Hieraaetus pennatus","Booted Eagle","Aquila pennata","Booted Eagle"
Here we see that the Clements list assigns the species to the genus
Aquila and changes its specific name, but leaves its common
name unaltered.

The changes
This summary treats the IOC list as the baseline, and for each genus (in
alphabetical order) describes the changes needed to reach agreement with
the Clements list. Any genus not mentioned below is treated identically
by both lists (e.g. Ephippiorhynchus).
The summary does not (at the moment) attempt to detect "trivial" common
name (e.g. Grey vs. Gray) and specific name (e.g. pennatus vs.
pennata) changes, but this may change in future.
